It has been public knowledge for over 25 years that drinking alcohol during pregnancy can do damage to the developing baby. Nevertheless, more than 5,000 babies are born in the U.S. every year with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and perhaps as many as 50,000 babies are born with alcohol related disorders. It is not enough to inform pregnant women to abstain from alcohol. We must educate our young people before they reach their parenting years, so they understand clearly how important it is to avoid alcohol before, during and after pregnancy. Awareness today will lead to a healthier lifestyle tomorrow, ensuring that more babies in the next generation will be born with the potential to live healthy, productive lives. Enclosed please find a packet with materials for a pilot project, FAS TEEN SURVEY 2002, including a survey questionnaire form, a survey answer sheet, a survey data collection sheet, 25 FAS info cards, and instructions for conducting the survey. This is a peer education project that is intended to be easy, fun, and informative. Project FAS TEEN SURVEY has two major short-term goals: 1) To collect data to determine the level of awareness about FAS issues among teens; and 2) To raise awareness about FAS disorders among the teens being surveyed. The long-term goal is to lower the incidence of FAS disorders in the next generation. The target population of this project includes teens in Arizona from age 12 to 17, but data will be collected for all individuals surveyed, regardless of age or location. As a sponsor of FAS TEEN SURVEY, you are being asked to provide 25 fun size candy bars for the team to give to individuals after the survey is completed, one per individual, along with one FAS info card. Snickers ® fun size bars can be purchased at a cost of less than $.20 each, for an expense to you of about $5.00 for 25 bars. The two teens who volunteer to conduct the survey will each receive a prize after mailing the data sheet as noted on the instruction sheet. As a sponsor, you will be acknowledged on the web site www.fasteen.com This project was designed by Teresa Kellerman, Director of the FAS Community Resource Center in Tucson, Arizona, on behalf of and with support from the Arc of Arizona Prevention Committee, with a grant from the Speckhard-Knight Foundation.
